Young U's In Nine Goal Thriller
Cambridge United 4-5 Northampton Town
In Saturday's Youth Alliance fixture,
Cambridge started off well with taking a two goal lead with the two centre backs, Michael Morrison (right) and Adam Davies both scoring superb headers from corners. But five minutes later Northampton replied with a well worked goal.
Cambridge continued to dominate throughout the first half, leading to Sam Reed scoring from a well struck shot from 25 yards by Ashley Fuller. Cambridge went in at half time with a 3-1 lead and a good performance so far.
The U's started the second half poorly when straight from kick off Cambridge lost the ball and Northampton went down the other end and scored.
Northampton started to put the pressure on Cambridge and in the 65th minute the referee gave a dubious decision on the edge of the Cambridge box and the free kick was converted into the top corner. That made the score 3-3 and the young U's were now up against it.
Soon afterwards, Northampton broke into the Cambridge half and a great strike by the Northampton captain flew into the top right hand corner.
This forced Ricky Duncan (left) to change to a 3-4-3 formation and things started to get better.
Cambridge started to look threatening again but with all the U's looking to go forward in search for the equaliser, Northampton broke and exposed the gaps in defence. They scored their fifth goal with only injury time to go.
Still Cambridge did not give up and scored a consolation goal when Dave Daniels cut the ball back to Rob Macdonald who slotted the ball in the bottom left hand corner. Before they kicked off the referee blew the final whistle to end a disappointing game.
