Wednesday 5th March 2008

Despite last Saturday being our first defeat in five matches at Leiston, the points gained in this run, apart from our first half display against Wroxham, fell below the standard of performance that we have set this season.  But in the last two games we have not only taken six points but also got back to playing the type of football that has been our trademark with the enthusiasm, workrate and quality that you would expect from a group of potential professional footballers.

Following our disappointing display at Leiston, in a lacklustre 1-0 defeat, we had a couple of soul searching meetings with the players to identify and remedy the reasons behind our run of poor form.Whilst it has been pleasing that our new found resilience has allowed us to gain points that we have not deserved, our role as a developmental team means that we demand results come from performances.  In the short term, good results can hide a decline in performance. In the long term, performances will ultimately dictate results, especially the one which we are all judged on - developing and producing players.

On Wednesday at Woodbridge, the attitude of the players was first class and our positive approach led to an excellent exhibition of attacking football. We looked sharper and more incisive than of late despite a lively pitch, blustery conditions and the fixture being the fourth in eight days for this group of players. It just shows that when we talk about the pitch, weather or tiredness as a reason for not performing they are in fact excuses. When the players have their heads right, none of these factors have any influence on how we play. With the right mentality, we can outplay anyone in this league, on any surface, in any conditions. Without it, although we can still grind out results, individually and collectively we look a shadow of our real selves.

Despite threatening in the first minute and creating other very acceptable chances, we came into the dressing room at half time trailing by the only goal. At half time, apart from a few details, we just had to reaffirm our belief that we would get a result and the response of the players was excellent. With the exception of an isolated scare or two, we started the half on the front foot and dominated the game.

James Paterson and Craig Bussens could have levelled the score before Brad Hunter stepped up with his first Ridgeons League goal to equalise with a fine volley. Despite neat approach play and some fantastic runs by Craig Bussens, we could not find the winner until the introduction of our enigma, Adam Marriott.

With just six minutes remaining, Sam Cutler drove at their centre backs and unleashed a thunderous strike which dipped just in front of the home keeper. He could only parry the ball into the path of the onrushing Adam Marriott who dropped a shoulder and picked his spot with typical nonchalance. If only we could get his workrate to match his quality...

Adam Marriott

We played out the closing stages with excellent composure for a well deserved and welcome three points.

Team: Beagle, McAuley, Kirby, Carr, Bowe, Cutler, Bussens, Ives, Wixon (Marriott 75), Hunter, Paterson.
