West Ham loanee Jack Jeffery scored his first Cambridge United goal when he opened the scoring at Salisbury City on Saturday, and he was delighted with the team's return to winning ways.

After last week's disappointing defeat at home to relegated Stafford Rangers, United ran out 2-0 winners thanks to well-taken goals from 'JJ' and Mark Beesley and the 18-year-old enthused, "This was a great result for everyone, especially after last week.

"After that we owed today's result for the fans who were magnificent again. This is a tough place to come, the other teams at the top of the league know that from their results here, and the gaffer had us prepared for what to expect," he revealed.

"Salisbury are no more physical than any other side in this league but there were a few hairy challenges going in and the sending off was justified as their lad went in two-footed and Rob did well to get away from him.

"It was important how we reacted to that, especially as the ref was handy with his cards. But away from the challenges I thought in the first half we did well with the wind at our backs.

"The goal came from something we worked on in training," he added. "The gaffer wanted me to play right in front of the keeper so if anything is knocked down I can be there and turn on it, and that couldn't have worked sweeter from Danny's shot.

"The second half was a bit slower-paced as the conditions favoured them, but to be fair we didn't feel we were in any real danger once we were ahead. The wind played a part in the second half performance; it becomes far more difficult to play the channels when any ball forward just goes all over the place and it's then when we have to grind out the result."

Looking ahead to Tuesday's home game, Jack concluded, "Torquay on Tuesday will be a huge game. A win and we know we are in the play-offs, and that's the least this club deserves. There should be a big crowd in for it and we owe those supporters a good performance to make up for the last couple of games at the Abbey."
