Players' Post-Match Reaction
After Cambridge United won 2-1 at Stevenage on Saturday, two of United's players were understandably delighted while former U's loanee Tes Bramble was generous in defeat.
U's skipper Mark Albrighton had another colossalgame at the back and described the result as "fantastic".
"They hadn't conceded a goal in eight games and were top of the league and were there on merit," he said. "We came here unbeaten and all the lads have worked our socks off for each other and deserve to leave with the win."
The 31-year-old revealed. "We went out with a game plan which worked so well they were limited to just a couple of chances. That shows just how hard we as a team work. From defending from the front two, closing everything down in midfield and being strong in defence this was all down to all the work on the training ground, team spirit and the magnificent support from an incredible turnout from the fans.
"They were singing from one o'clock onwards and never really let up. That's worth a goal start to any team and hopefully they'll all be at the Abbey on Tuesday with an lot more who couldn't make it today. Aldershot are now top so that will be another great game and a big night at the Abbey, and after today the fans and all the players will be buzzing and we can go out and do it all again."
Mark Convery opened the scoring with a glancing header, his first game for United since joining in the summer, and he commented, "The goal was a rarity, the first with my head in professional football, but I'd like to praise the cross from Dan (Gleeson) to give me the chance.
"It took a while for him to get it in but when it did I was happy to get on the end of it.
"We knew in the camp we were coming for the win; we weren't coming for the draw. I think teams have come here and maybe sat off Stevenage, and rightly so as they are a decent team. We went about it the other way and set out to get at them, not giving them any time to settle, and it showed how well it worked by how many chances and how much of the play they had."
Convery revealed that he was substituted because of a slight groin problem but he is confident he will be fit for Tuesday's match, and added, "We must use today as a springboard to go on and take the game to Aldershot on Tuesday.
"It will be another big game but we'll have the advantage of the fantastic support we have had today. It was like we were at home and if the fans keep up support like that we can continue to produce the goods on the pitch."
Finally, Stevenage striker Tes Bramble, who had a spell at United on loan from Southend in 2005 and scored the 'Goal of the Season' against Wycombe at the Abbey on 'Fans United' day, believes both clubs will be competing at the top of the table this season.
"You're always disappointed to lose a game, especially after the run we have been on, but we will come again and both clubs will be at the top of the league come the end of the season.
"It was physical out there but we knew that would be so," he continued.
"You try to put yourself about but there's some experience in United's defence and that shows in the fact they are still unbeaten. There's a good team and a good squad at the Abbey and after today I wish them well."
