Quinn: "Rock Solid At The Back"
Jimmy Quinn called for a clean sheet in today's match and his players obliged as they ground out a goalless draw in the heat and dust of Woking's Kingfield Stadium.
"I'm absolutely delighted because we looked rock solid at the back," he commented afterwards. "Big Gavin (Hoyte) had a virus and it was too much of a risk to play him in this heat, but we looked rock solid and the only thing that was missing was us taking one of the quite a few chances we had.
"But you get games like that and you have to give credit to Woking. I thought they got men behind the ball quickly, they had three big lads at the back and they put their heads on a lot of things.
"We probably need to do a little bit of work on our movement; I think when balls were coming into the box we were standing still once or twice, but that's being picky. I can't fault anybody's effort and I thought it was a good performance that was just missing a goal."
The side was affected by a virus earlier this week but Quinn added, "Overall I think we were the better side. We caused them more problems but we were just lacking that bit of quality.
"At the back Danny Potter gives everybody great confidence because he's so cool, both with his feet and coming for crosses and stuff, and it was just that we had one or two opportunities where we didn't quite catch the ball and strike it properly.
"Big Leo went through and missed the target and those things make a difference between getting a point and winning the game, and if we'd have produced a little bit more quality we would definitely have won that. But it was a good performance point, it's a point, and it leads us onto Monday, so what we've got to do now is prepare right and get plenty of fluids in us, get the food right, and concentrate on our home form and get the three points against Ebbsfleet."
Darren Quinton left the pitch in the first half to be replaced by Stephen Reed and Quinn revealed that the midfielder suffered a dead leg: "He wanted to carry on but it was too hot and we have another game around the corner. He's got ice on it now and hopefully that will settle down, whereas if he'd played on with it he might have been out for a while.
"We did the right thing getting him off early, although with his engine Darren is one of those who might have nicked us a goal if he'd stayed on, but unfortunately we couldn't take the risk and we had to get him off."
Quinn concluded, " I can't fault the lads' effort, there's a good spirit there and they're disappointed, which tells you everything. I'm delighted with that and one or two of them are having a go at the forwards for not scoring, which is great because you need that hunger and desire and that was missing last year.
"It was easy for me after the game today because I can see that they're a bit disappointed with themselves and the beauty of it is they've got Monday to bounce back."
United's next match is at home to Ebbsfleet United on Monday (3pm).
