Brown: "A Good Start"
Captain Danny Brown and new striker Leo Fortune-West were both involved in the incident that saw York's Stuart Elliott dismissed on Saturday and had little sympathy for the Minstermen midfielder.
Brown revealed, "I got smashed by their man and as I was down Leo was smashed by the same player. It seemed a culmination of both incidents and obviously he's done himself and York no favours."
The U's skipper added, "I wasn't pleased with the performance. I think we have a lot more to come as this team is just beginning to gel and competitive games like today can only help that.
"What we did today is something we didn't have when I arrived last year, and that's the ability to grind out a result. We came here, played it ugly, and we're going home with 3 points."
516 United fans were there for United's first opening day win since 1998 and Brown wants to repeat the result with a home win against Oxford United on Thursday.
"It's a good start taking three points from the first game, we now need the fans to turn up on Thursday and show their support like the travelling fans who were magnificent, like they were last season.
"But it doesn't matter about the past and what's happened before - this is all about now, this season and what we know we can do."
Veteran striker Leo Fortune-West first gave his view of the sending-off incident, then revealed that he was unhappy with his debut performance.
"For the penalty, Danny Brown got flattened, I protested to their player over what he did and he went into me. As a foul has occurred in the box and the referee has seen it, then it's a penalty. The referee then adjudged it to be a red card offence.
"I wasn't really happy with my performance," he added. "It was only my second game of the season, including friendlies, and it was difficult. I made several mistakes and the team made several mistakes but I'll take the win, which was very important to get, not only to start the season on the right foot but for the fans who made the long journey.
"It's good to get a win under our belts without playing well and we can build on that and give a better performance in what will be a tough game against Oxford on Thursday."
