McEwan: "We Were The Better Team"
York manager Billy McEwan was unhappy at seeing his side lose 2-1 and reduced to ten men after taking a first half lead.
Craig Farrell gave the home side the lead from the penalty spot after Dan Gleeson was adjudged to have fouled Martyn Woolford in the area, but United's Gavin Hoyte equalised at a 51st minute corner and Lee Boylan scored from the spot five minutes later when Stuart Elliott was dismissed for violent conduct.
"We will have to watch the penalty incident on video," commented McEwan. "The referee says it's because Stuart Elliott raised his arm. He says that Fortune-West raised his arm first, there was a late challenge involved so the referee has only seen Stuart raise his arm and has made that decision. It's very disappointing but we'll have to have a look at it before we think about what to do next."
He added, "The game itself was decided by three set plays and from that point of view we are disappointed because I thought we played well and were the better team out there. We've got a new team we've put together and we played some excellent football today. We had a lot of the game and dominated for long periods.
"The equaliser was disappointing as we should've cut out the long ball and avoided the corner, we then failed to pick out the man from the corner and, whether or not the first header or the rebound could have been saved, it was an extremely soft goal to concede."
However, McEwan voiced grudging admiration of United's performance: "Cambridge were very physical and came for a draw with the 3-5-2 formation. Jimmy and Alan set out to do a job and to be fair to them the players did it, so they will be very pleased to have got the winner.
"They'll feel on the coach home they've won the lottery; we, on the other hand, are very disappointed."
