St Ives U's Coach Success
The St Ives U's, the Cambridge United Supporters Club from St Ives, will be running a coach service offering subsidised fares from their area to all Cambridge United home Saturday matches, for a sixth successive season.
It has been difficult to keep the momentum going in United's hours of adversity over the last couple of years, but thanks to the chairman and the treasurer, David Bently and David Pointer and other committee members, St Ives U's have made it through.
At the St Ives U's AGM, Cambridge United directors stated that they were behind this initiative and went on to say, "We are very pleased with the St Ives supporters initiative as it serves as a useful model for other surrounding towns where the Cambridge United fan base is increasing.
"Any scheme that enhances our support but reduces traffic congestion in the City has got to be good news for the U's".
The coach, which is open to all who wish to go to the Saturday home games in Newmarket Road, is sponsored by local businesses and individuals who are also keen to keep this scheme going.
Mark Coulson, owner of St Ives Beds, said, "We are proud to be involved in this local initiative, especially the unescorted youngsters who are taken to and from the ground safely."
Cambridge United have agreed to help with free tickets for anyone that sponsors the coach, in which two Main stand tickets will be offered for sponsorship of £50 and four for £100. These will normally be in the Executive Box, except for particular high profile games when they will still be in a fairly central position. Harris Suite vouchers will normally be provided in either case.
St Ives U's also run quiz nights and other events to raise the money to help pay for the coach.
