Going to Torquay United, 3rd November?
TORQUAY UNITED
Saturday 3rd November 2007, Kick-Off 3.00pm
Plainmoor, Torquay, Devon, TQ1 3PS. Tel: 01803 328666
Directions by Car: At the end of the M5, follow the A38, before turning left onto the A380 towards Newton Abbott. On reaching Kingskerwell, take the first exit at the large McDonalds roundabout onto the A3022 towards Torquay. After approximately a mile, turn left towards Babbacombe (A379), then after a mile, take another left, into Westhill Road. Proceed along this road, and continue into Warbro Road at the top of the hill, where Plainmoor will appear on the right.
Parking: Street parking is the order of the day here.
Train: The station is around two miles from Plainmoor. Head leftwards from the station, towards the town - on Torbay Road, as it becomes The Strand, Torwood Street and finally Babbacombe Road. After passing Westwood Avenue on your left, take the next left into Warberry Road and at the top of the hill opt for Windsor Road, from where the ground can be seen. A taxi should cost around £5.
Expect rail replacement buses, and as such, a slightly increased journey time between Exeter St. David's Station and Torquay.
The Away Travel Club will be running a coach to the game, leaving Ely at 6.45am and The Abbey at 7.30am (please note this is 30 minutes earlier than originally advertised). It will be priced at £33 for adults, £31 for members and £16 for junior U's and children. Please call 01223 566500 to reserve your seat.
Admission: £15 for adults, £12 for students and senior citizens, £5 for under 16's.
Programme: £2
The Ground: Torquay's Plainmoor is nothing spectacular, but nicely functional. The away end - the Sparkworld Away Terrace - is covered and offers plenty of room for those who venture south. Transfer to the Main Stand is available, usually for an additional £1.
Pre-Match Refreshment: The supporters club (Boots & Laces) tends to admit away supporters. O'Connors pub is not far from the ground, while rambling train travellers will pass the George Inn on Babbacombe Road, which is conveniently located next to a chip shop. A little further a field, there is, as you might expect, a selection of eateries and pubs in the town centre.
Local Attractions. Not far from the station, and a little way past the ground by car, lies the English Channel (referred to in France, as La Manche). If the weather isn't playing up, the coast might be a pleasant place to wander along before the game. But it is November, so I wouldn't expect too much.
Otherwise, I know you'll all be cursing the fixture scheduling, with Plant World in Newton Abbott only open from April to mid-October. The famous Stone Age site, Kents Cavern - near Babbacombe - may be worth a visit, but at £7 entry is rather dear.
Torquay is twinned with Hamelin (of Pied Piper fame) in Germany.
